Learning from Dale Stephens @ PICNIC 2012
Education is changing faster than we can imagine and technology has brought about the unbundling of school. Using his own educational journey as inspiration, Dale Stephens, Founder of Uncollege, talks about how institutions can change to embrace their self-directed future.
The Unschooling movement was started by John Holt, author of “How children fail”. The premise of unschooling is that kids learn best in a self directed process driven by their own curiosity. Dale makes the point that unschooling emphasizes personal choice and reveals the real interests and drivers of the individual. Modern information technology is enabling kids to learn in a self directed way yet we still have schools organized like factories. John Holts ideas are forty years old but maybe now they are coming into their own as kids self select the best learning practice for themselves.
