Lata Mangeshkar illuminated the Indian diaspora with her voice. A classical voice, a voice that became the voice for Bollywood, Mata Mageskar was a “playback singer”. Many Bollywood actresses mimed to her voice. In this recording she is the voice of India the meditative, the India that attracted George Harrison, the India that has enchanted the world.

She recorded over 30,000 songs in 36 languages, a demonstration of how music crosses barriers and can bring us together.

Remembering Lata Mangeshkar, Taapsee Pannu wrote, “Hope you keep mesmerising the heavens as well with your voice and presence”

The Times of India remembers her here.

RIP the nightingale of Bollywood.
