RIP Ravi Shankar
Philip Glass notated Indian Classical music for Ravi Shankar and went on to create a body of American new music that will forever be in debt to the late great musician. The Beatles were intoxicated by his wisdom as well as his music. The world has more love because of the maestro. He pioneered India’s coming out from under imperial oppression to infect our cultures with the cyclical night long reverie of his country’s music. Every club goer who has tranced the night away should thank Ravi Shankar. In fact we all should give thanks. His final act of progress was to pass his mastership on to his daughter Anoushka, in defiance of the tradition of selecting a male musical heir. “… we have a special involvement with this music because it is not a fixed music .. I never really know what I am going to play …”
